The Price of Enchantment
I always thought being invisible was the worst feeling in the world.
Turns out, I was wrong.
I know that now. Back then, being Emma Daniels meant being the girl no one noticed. Shy, bookish, blending into the hollow, cracked magnolia walls of Westfield High.
I spent my lunchtimes in the library, hiding in the pages of fantasy novels, dreaming of a life filled with magic—something beyond the boring, monotonous days that I dragged myself through every day of my life.
That’s why, when I found the note in my locker, my heart nearly stopped.
Meet us in the old music room after school. Lydia.
Lydia Blake. The name alone sent a ripple through me. She was the leader of the so-called Moonlight Goddess Coven—Lydia, Clara, Bella, and Ivy.
The four of them were a mystery wrapped in dark clothes and quiet whispers. They didn’t belong to the school, not really; they seemed to float above it, like they had access to hidden secrets the rest of us could only dream about.
And now, they wanted me.
Curiosity won out over common sense.
I should’ve turned and walked away, but how could I? I just had to know why.
The old music room was exactly how I imagined it: dimly lit, heavy with the scent of dust and evocative incense, with flickering candlelight throwing long shadows on the walls.
The girls were waiting for me, standing inside a semi-circle drawn with chalk, ancient alchemical symbols etched onto the floor.
Their eyes gleamed like they knew something I didn’t.
“Emma,” Lydia’s voice was soft, almost hypnotic.
“We’ve been watching you. We think you have potential.”
“Potential for what?” I asked, my voice trembling slightly.
“To join us,” she said with a smile that was both inviting and unsettling.
“But first, we must test you. You must pass our initiation.”
“Will you accept?”
My heart pounded. I should have said no. I should have walked away, but the thrill was too much to resist.
I’d spent so long fading into the background, and here they were, offering me something… more.
“What do I have to do?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.
Lydia handed me a small vial filled with a shimmering, silvery liquid. “You have to make Jack Turner fall in love with you.”
Jack Turner. His name sent a shock right through me. He was the golden boy of our school—the one everyone adored, and everyone wanted, girls and boys alike.
The thought of him falling for someone like me was beyond laughable. But with this… with magic, anything seemed possible.
I took the vial, feeling the weight of it in my palm. It was more than just liquid. It was power!
She handed me a box of magical tools too—a small rusted cauldron, candles, a pestle and mortar, jars filled with strange-looking herbs, and a small old, worn out spellbook.
“You’ll need these,” she said with a sly smile.
Later that night, I prepared my bedroom ready to perform the ritual. My parents were both out that night on date night and my younger brother locked himself in his room playing some online video game, so I pretty much had the house all to myself.
Great I thought. Noone around to disturb me!
I carefully laid out all of the magical tools and items that Lydia had given me on top of my dresser drawers. It was the strangest sensation, almost like I was becoming a real teenage witch!
The air in my bedroom suddenly became filled with the scent of crushed herbs and burning candles.
As I stood over the small rusted cauldron, I could feel the energy around me shifting, crackling with anticipation. I whispered the incantations Lydia had taught me, my hands trembling as I carefully added each shimmering ingredient.
The liquid inside the cauldron began to glow, swirling with vibrant hues of purple and gold, casting flickering lights across the walls.
A strange warmth filled the room, as if the potion itself was alive, pulsing with power.
For the first time, I felt a thrill deep within me—this was real, and I was the one holding the magic in my hands.
The next day, I had to find a way to get close enough to Jack to give him the potion. That was easier said than done. We’d never even spoken before. How on Earth was I ever going to make this work?
I was standing at my locker, nervously clutching the vial, when I felt a hand gently touch my shoulder.
“Have you done it yet?” A soft voice whispered.
I turned to find Bella standing behind me.
“Not yet,” I stammered. “I haven’t found the right moment.”
“That’s okay,” she replied with a smile that could melt ice. “Let me help you.”
“Help me? How?”
She leaned in close, her blue eyes glinting.
“We’ll create a distraction. You just walk up to him and give him a kiss.”
“A kiss?” I blushed. “How is that going to help?”
“While you’re kissing him, I’ll slip a few drops into his drink. What do you think?”
I gulped. The idea was outrageous, humiliating even. But then again, wasn’t this what I’d wanted all along? To step out of the shadows and be noticed?
“Alright,” I said, my voice barely audible.
We walked down the corridor together, side by side, and I could feel the weight of curious stares on me.
As we approached the cafeteria, Bella scanned the room.“There,” she said, pointing to the far corner where Jack sat surrounded by his friends.
My heart lurched. Jack, with his easy smile and tousled hair, looked like something out of a dream. What was I thinking?
“Ready?” Bella asked.
No, I wasn’t. But I nodded anyway.
We walked over, the chatter around us dying down as all eyes turned towards me.
“What do you want?” a blonde girl sneered, glaring at me from Jack’s lap.
“I just… I need to talk to Jack,” I managed to say.
The girl laughed coldly.
“Talk? About what?”
“Uh… in private.”
Jack looked at me, his eyes scanning me from head to toe. Then, to my surprise, he smiled.
“Emma, right? Emma Daniels?”
He knew my name. I blushed and nodded.
“Yeah… I just—”
Before I could finish, I leaned forward and kissed him—hard. His lips were warm, soft. And for a brief moment, he kissed me back.
Then chaos erupted. “You bitch!”
The blonde girl screamed.
“You think you can just walk in here and kiss my boyfriend?”
Before I could respond, she punched me. Hard. I fell to the floor, my cheek stinging as tears welled up in my eyes.
Laughter and jeers echoed around the room all directed at me.
But then Bella was at my side, pulling me up.
“Don’t worry,” she whispered. “It worked. I put the drops in. He’ll be yours soon.”
I wiped my tears, looking up at her through blurry eyes.
“Are you sure?”
“Trust me,” Bella said, her smile unnerving.
“Soon enough, Jack Turner will be all yours.”
And she was right.
The next day, Jack sought me out. His smile was warm, his eyes soft. “Emma,” he said, “I never noticed before… how beautiful you are.”
And just like that, Jack Turner was mine!
At first, it was everything I’d ever dreamed it would be. Jack was charming, attentive, always looking for me in a crowded room.
It was like something out of a fantasy novel, the quiet girl getting the prince. But even the best dreams have a way of twisting themselves into worst nightmares.
Jack’s affection became something else—something darker.
He was everywhere, all the time. His touch grew possessive, his gaze obsessive. Jack’s texts became relentless, filling my phone with messages every few minutes. When I didn’t respond fast enough, he would appear—at my house, outside my classroom, waiting at my locker.
His love had turned into something like a cage, and I was its prisoner.
At first, Jack’s attention thrilled me. But as the days wore on, the thrill faded. His eyes, once filled with warmth, now seemed to trap me, pinning me under the weight of his gaze.
The joy I’d once felt was replaced with fear. I couldn’t breathe. I was suffocating in his love.
I went back to Lydia, desperation gnawing at me. “This isn’t what I wanted,” I cried. “He’s obsessed with me. I can’t live like this.”
Lydia’s smile was cold. “Magic has consequences, Emma. You wanted his love. Now you have it.”
I was trapped, ensnared by my own wish.
Jack’s love had turned into a prison. I tried everything to break free, scouring old books, searching for a way out. And at last I found a spell, one that promised to finally sever the bond. But at a price… a piece of my soul!
I didn’t hesitate.
The ritual was excruciating, like something being torn from the depths of me. But when it was done, I was free!
Jack’s obsession had vanished, and he looked at me as though I were a stranger.
I should have felt relief. But all I felt was emptiness. A hollowness where that piece of my soul had been.
I thought I was free. But that night, as I lay in bed, I realised the true cost of the spell and if everything I had done.
Trying to get Jack to fall in love with me, and then seeking to undo the spell had cost me my ability to feel anything. Joy, sorrow, love. Every emotion I had ever felt was all gone.
I was empty. Numb.
I had broken Jack’s obsession with me but in doing so inevitably paid the price of enchantment.
And so in my quest for love, I had lost the one thing I needed the most—myself.

Author’s Thoughts
I think most of us know what it’s like to want someone to notice us.
To look up when we enter a room. To remember our name. To make us feel that, out of everyone, they’re glad we’re there.
That’s what makes Emma’s wish understandable.
But Jack never gets to choose her. She wants to feel loved, and in trying to make that happen, she takes something from him.
Then the attention she dreamed of becomes something she’s frightened of.
There’s something sad about both of them being trapped in a relationship neither can freely choose. And when Emma finally breaks the spell, she loses the feelings that made her want that connection in the first place.
For me, that brings the story back to where it began: wanting to be seen.
Being noticed can mean so much. But being freely chosen means something a spell can never promise.
Would the words “I love you” still feel beautiful if you knew the other person had no choice but to say them?
Just something to think about.
