Foreword
Most children have a favourite toy.
The one that goes everywhere with them.
The one that listens to secrets.
The one that feels like a best friend.
But sometimes… that favourite toy is a little unusual.
A little scruffy.
A little smelly.
A little misunderstood.
And sometimes — just sometimes — the most unlikely hero is the one who’s been right beside us all along.
This is a bedtime adventure for readers aged 7+, about friendship, bravery, and discovering that being different might just be your greatest superpower.
Happy reading.

“Max, are you ready for bed?” Mum called.
“Yes, Mum,” Max replied.
“Pewwwww! What’s that horrible smell?” Mum asked, wrinkling her nose.
“Did you get rid of all those dirty socks from under your bed like I told you to?”
“Yes, Mum,” Max said.
“Then what is that smell?” Mum asked, sniffing around the room.
Max giggled and pointed to his bed.
“It’s Mangy Mutt, Mum! He’s perfect just the way he is.”
Mum sighed, shaking her head.
“That old toy really needs a wash, Max.”Max hugged Mangy Mutt tighter.
“But Mum, he’s my best friend, and I love him just the way he is!”

Mum smiled and tucked Max into bed.
“Alright, my little superhero, but one day you’ll have to wash him.
“Max grinned.
“Maybe, Mum. But not tonight.”
As Mum turned off the light, she whispered, “Goodnight, Max. Sweet dreams.”
Max snuggled up with Mangy Mutt, whispering, “You know, Mangy Mutt, if you were a superhero, you’d be the best one ever.”
Max closed his eyes, and as he drifted off to sleep, he hugged Mangy Mutt tightly, wishing with all his heart that his favourite toy could come to life.

Morning came, and Max woke up with a big yawn. He stretched and looked around for Mangy Mutt.
“There you are, buddy,” Max said, grabbing his scruffy husky toy from the pillow beside him.
Max got out of bed and started his morning routine. He brushed his teeth, with Mangy Mutt sitting on the bathroom sink watching him.
As he got dressed for school, Max made sure to put Mangy Mutt safely in his school bag.
“Ready for another adventure?” Max whispered.
Mum called from downstairs, “Max, breakfast is ready! Don’t forget to brush your hair!”
Max laughed, patting his messy hair.
“Come on, Mangy Mutt, let’s get ready for the day.”
Page 4
Max hurried downstairs, his school bag bouncing on his back with Mangy Mutt peeking out of it.
As they sat at the breakfast table, Mum looked over and noticed Mangy Mutt.
“Max, are you sure you don’t want to wash Mangy Mutt today?” she asked, a hint of concern in her voice.
Max shook his head firmly.
“No way, Mum. Mangy Mutt is perfect just the way he is!”
Mum sighed and handed Max his toast.
“Alright, but one day you’ll see that even superheroes need to have a bath.”
Max grinned and took a big bite of his toast.
“Maybe, Mum. But today is not that day.”
Mum smiled, ruffling Max’s hair.
“Okay, my little superhero. Finish your breakfast, and let’s get you off to school.”

With breakfast finished, Max grabbed his school bag and headed to the car.
Mum smiled as she held the car door open for him.”Hop in, Max! Let’s get you to school.”
Max climbed into the car, making sure Mangy Mutt was safely tucked in his bag.
“Ready, Mum!” he said, fastening his seatbelt.
As they drove to Oakdene Primary School, Max chatted excitedly about his plans for the day.
Mum listened, glancing in the rear-view mirror.
“Remember to listen to your teachers and have fun,” she said.
They arrived at the school, and Mum parked the car. She walked Max to the school gate, holding his hand.
“Have a great day at school, Max! And take care of Mangy Mutt!” she said, giving him a big hug.
Max waved goodbye, smiling. “I will, Mum! Bye!”
As he walked through the school gate, Max could feel the comforting presence of Mangy Mutt in his bag.
He smiled, knowing that his favourite toy was with him by his side. At the school gates, Max met his friends.
“Hey, Max! Did you bring Mangy Mutt again?” one of them asked.
Max nodded proudly, opening his bag just a little to show Mangy Mutt’s scruffy head.
“Of course! Mangy Mutt goes everywhere with me.”
His friends smiled, though one of them wrinkled their nose.
“He sure does smell bad, though!”
Max just laughed.
“That’s because he’s been on so many awesome adventures!”

During playtime, Max and his friends headed to the school playground. Swings swayed in the breeze, and the slide gleamed in the morning sun.
Max found a spot on a bench and carefully took Mangy Mutt out of his bag.
As he hugged his scruffy toy, a group of kids gathered around.
“Wow, Max, you really do take Mangy Mutt everywhere,” said one of them, pointing at the well-loved toy.
“He’s my best friend,” Max replied with a smile, holding Mangy Mutt tightly.
A girl wrinkled her nose and said, “But he smells so bad! Why don’t you wash him?”
Max shook his head firmly. “Mangy Mutt is perfect just the way he is. He’s been on all my adventures with me.”
Another boy chimed in, “Yeah, I guess every superhero has to have a sidekick.”
Max grinned. “Exactly! Mangy Mutt is my superhero sidekick.”
The bell rang, signalling the end of playtime. Max carefully put Mangy Mutt back in his bag and headed inside with his friends, ready to start the school day.

That evening, after a busy day at school, Max was getting ready for bed. He held Mangy Mutt close as Mum tucked him in.
“Goodnight, Max. Sweet dreams,” Mum said, kissing him on the forehead and turning off the light.
Max snuggled under the covers with Mangy Mutt. As he looked at his beloved toy, he whispered, “You know, Mangy Mutt, if you were a superhero, you’d be the best one ever.”
He hugged Mangy Mutt tightly, closing his eyes and making a special wish.
“I wish Mangy Mutt could come to life and be a real superhero,” Max whispered softly. As Max drifted off to sleep, the room grew quiet, and a magical feeling filled the air.
Mangy Mutt lay still beside Max, looking just as scruffy and loved as ever. But little did Max know, something amazing was about to happen that very night.
Page 8
In the middle of the night, a soft, magical glow began to fill Max’s room. It started as a tiny spark and grew brighter and brighter, surrounding Mangy Mutt.
Mangy Mutt began to twitch and wiggle, his scruffy fur shimmering in the light. Slowly, he started to stretch, coming to life right before Max’s eyes, though Max remained fast asleep.
The magical light enveloped Mangy Mutt completely, lifting him off the bed for a moment.
As the light faded, Mangy Mutt landed back on the bed, now animated and brimming with energy.
Mangy Mutt looked around the room with wide, curious eyes. He wiggled his nose and wagged his tail, feeling stronger and more powerful than ever before.
“This is incredible!” Mangy Mutt thought to himself. “I’m alive… and I feel like I can do anything!”
Mangy Mutt’s adventure as a real superhero was just about to begin.
Page 9
Mangy Mutt leaped off the bed, his eyes sparkling with excitement. He tested his newfound superpowers, feeling a burst of energy coursing through him.
First, he discovered his Stink-eye Stare. With a concentrated look, his eyes glowed bright luminescent green, and he could see in the dark.
Next, he wagged his tail and unleashed his Smelly Bum Stink Spray, filling the air with a very stinky, pungent smell!
Mangy Mutt giggled, realising how useful his odd abilities could be.
He opened his mouth and breathed out a very stinky, yellow mustard-coloured gas. “Peeeew! Now that really is Bad Old Dog Breath,” he thought, smiling a cheeky smile.
He then growled softly, and the room seemed to shake with his Grumpy Growl. “Wow, this is amazing!” he exclaimed.
“It feels like an earthquake!”
But before he could try out any more of his newly discovered amazing powers, Max began to stir and wake up!
Page 10
Max rubbed his eyes and sat up, blinking in the dim light.
“Mangy Mutt? Is that you?” he asked, his voice filled with sleepy confusion.
Mangy Mutt quickly jumped back onto the bed, his tail wagging furiously.
“Yes, Max! It’s me! I came to life, and I have superpowers!”
Max’s eyes widened in amazement.
“This is incredible! I knew you were special, Mangy Mutt, but I never imagined this!”
Mangy Mutt beamed with pride.
“I can do all sorts of things now! I have a Stink-eye Stare, Smelly Bum Stink Spray, Bad Old Dog Breath, Grumpy Growl, and even more!”
Max hugged Mangy Mutt tightly.
“This is going to be the best adventure ever! We’ll be unstoppable together!”
Mangy Mutt nodded. “Absolutely! We’re a team, Max. And I’m ready to help you with anything.”
As Max and Mangy Mutt shared a moment of excitement, the first light of dawn began to peek through the curtains.
A new day was starting, and with it, a world of possibilities for Max and his superhero sidekick.
“Let’s get ready for school, Mangy Mutt,” Max said with a grin.
“We have a lot to do!”
Mangy Mutt agreed enthusiastically, ready to face the day and the adventures that awaited them.
Page 11
As Max and Mangy Mutt arrived at school, they could feel the excitement building. Max carefully placed Mangy Mutt in his bag, leaving a little opening so he could see out.
During morning playtime, Max noticed a commotion near the swings. A group of kids were gathered around a smaller boy who looked upset.
Mangy Mutt peeked out of the bag.
“What’s going on, Max?”
Max whispered, “I think there’s trouble. Let’s go check it out.”
Max approached the group, keeping Mangy Mutt hidden but ready. He saw that the meanest bully in school, Jack, was picking on the smaller boy, pushing him and making him cry.
Max felt his heart race. “This is our chance, Mangy Mutt,” he said softly. “Are you ready?”
Mangy Mutt’s eyes glowed with determination.
“Ready, Max. Let’s teach that bully a lesson.”
Max pretended to adjust his bag, giving Mangy Mutt a clear view of the bully. With a focused look, Mangy Mutt used his Stink-eye Stare, his eyes glowing bright green.
Jack stopped in his tracks, suddenly feeling uneasy. He looked around, confused. “What’s happening?” he muttered.
Mangy Mutt wagged his tail and unleashed his Smelly Bum Stink Spray. A foul odour floated out of the bag and quickly filled the air – Jack’s face twisted in disgust.”Ewww! What is that smell?” Jack exclaimed, stepping back.
The smaller boy took the opportunity to run away, and the other kids started laughing at Jack, who was too embarrassed to continue his bullying.
Max grinned, proud of Mangy Mutt. “Great job, buddy. You really are a superhero.”
Mangy Mutt wagged his tail happily. “Thanks, Max. Together, we can make sure no one gets bullied again.”
Page 12
Max and Mangy Mutt watched as the bully, Jack, retreated, holding his nose and looking utterly confused.
The smaller boy, now safe, approached Max with a grateful smile.
“Thanks, Max. I don’t know what happened, but that was amazing!” he said, glancing around as if trying to figure out where the strange smell had come from.
Max smiled back. “No problem. I’m just glad you’re okay.”
As the kids returned to their play, Mangy Mutt poked his head out of the bag and whispered, “What’s next, Max?”
Max thought for a moment.
“Let’s see if anyone else needs our help.”
They wandered around the playground, keeping an eye out for anyone in trouble. Near the climbing frame, Max spotted another kid struggling to reach his snack that had fallen under the frame, just out of reach.
“Looks like another job for us,” Max said, crouching down next to the boy. “Hang on, I’ve got just the thing.”
Max opened his bag slightly, and Mangy Mutt’s tail wagged with excitement. He quickly used his Stretchy Tongue Licker, extending his tongue to retrieve the snack and bring it closer to the boy’s hand.
“Wow, how did you do that?” the boy asked, amazed.
Max just smiled and winked. “It’s a little bit of magic.”
The boy grabbed his snack and grinned.
“Thanks, Max! You’re a real hero!”
Max and Mangy Mutt shared a knowing look.
“All in a day’s work,” Max thought, feeling proud of his superhero sidekick and the good they were doing together.
Page 13
As the morning went on, Max and Mangy Mutt continued to look for ways to help. During lunchtime, they noticed a group of kids gathered around a table where one of their classmates, Lily, had accidentally spilled her orange juice all over her lunch and herself.
Max nudged Mangy Mutt. “We should help her out,” he whispered.
Mangy Mutt nodded, and Max carefully took him out of the bag. With a swift and discreet move, Mangy Mutt used his Stretchy Tongue Licker to grab a napkin from a nearby table and handed it to Lily.
“Thanks, Max,” Lily said, wiping herself off.
“I don’t know how you did that, but you’re a lifesaver!”
Max smiled. “No problem, Lily. Happy to help.”
Just then, Max saw Jack, the bully, approaching again, looking for trouble. Jack started teasing another smaller kid, making him cry.
Max clenched his fists.
“Mangy Mutt, it’s time for a final move. Are you ready?
“Mangy Mutt’s eyes glowed with determination.
“Ready, Max.”
Max and Mangy Mutt approached Jack. Mangy Mutt positioned himself and, with perfect aim, unleashed his Power Pee Pee attack.
A quick, precise stream of wee hit Jack’s shoes, causing him to jump back in surprise.
“Ewww! What is this?” Jack yelled, looking down at his wet shoes in horror.
The other kids started laughing, and Jack, embarrassed and defeated, ran off smelling of wee!
The smaller kid wiped his tears and looked at Max with admiration.
“Thank you, Max! You really saved me.”
Max grinned, giving Mangy Mutt a proud look.
“All in a day’s work for Mangy Mutt and me.”
Mangy Mutt wagged his tail happily, knowing they had made the school a little safer and a lot happier.
Page 14
The rest of the day passed smoothly, with Max and Mangy Mutt ready to help wherever they could.
After school, Max headed home with Mangy Mutt safely tucked in his bag, feeling proud of their day’s accomplishments.
At bedtime, Max couldn’t wait to tell his mum about the exciting day. As she tucked him in, he said, “Mum, Mangy Mutt and I had the best day ever!”
Mum smiled, brushing a strand of hair from Max’s forehead.
“Oh? What happened today?”
Max’s eyes sparkled with excitement.
“Mangy Mutt came to life and helped me with all sorts of things. We stopped a bully, helped a friend, and even cleaned up a huge mess!”
Mum chuckled softly, thinking Max’s imagination was running wild.
“That sounds like quite the adventure, Max. But remember, even superheroes need their rest.”
Max hugged Mangy Mutt tightly.
“I know, Mum. But it’s all true. Mangy Mutt is a real superhero.”
As Mum kissed Max goodnight and turned off the light, Max whispered to Mangy Mutt, “I’m so glad you’re my best friend and superhero.”
Mangy Mutt’s eyes glowed softly in the dark.
“I’m glad too, Max. We’ll always be a great team.”
Max closed his eyes, a smile on his face, as he drifted off to sleep. Mangy Mutt lay beside him, ready for whatever adventures the next day would bring.
Together, they knew they could handle anything!
THE END
A Quiet Note
We often think heroes have to look strong, shiny, and perfect.
But real heroes don’t always wear capes.
Sometimes they’re a little worn around the edges.
Sometimes they smell like adventure.
Sometimes they don’t look like heroes at all.
Mangy Mutt reminds us that love doesn’t depend on appearances — and that kindness, loyalty, and courage can be found in the most unexpected places.
If you’ve ever felt different, overlooked, or not quite “perfect,” remember:
There may be more magic in you than anyone realises.
