Blackwater
Whenever I think about the small side side town of Blackwater – storm clouds invade every part of my waking mind.
Today was much like every other day living here—dark, dank, and disillusioned, as always the air around me was thick with salt and the darkest of secrets.
Stark grey concrete buildings rose up like towering sentinels against the brooding sky, casting long shadows over the narrow streets and hidden alleys.
The 90’s was a time of timid turbulence, hiding many of the city’s secrets in plain sight. None were more notorious, however, than the gang that ruled over my school.
All the teachers feared them, and for people like me, they were nothing short of a living nightmare!
The teenage gang, known to everyone simply as “The Shadows,” ruled over our school with an iron fist!
Their leader, Mason, was feared by all, but his most brutal act was yet to come.
I’m Alex, and I made the mistake of catching Sophia’s eye. Sophia, Mason’s girlfriend, was a thrill-seeker with a dark obsession for the occult.
Ever since she was young, Sophia had been fascinated by dark magic, a legacy passed down from her grandmother, who had introduced her to ancient rituals.
Sophia’s twisted fantasies involved finding the perfect person to become her eternal puppet, bound to her will by dark magic.
But for her spell to work, she needed someone who was utterly obsessed with her. Unfortunately for me, I fit that description perfectly!
My quiet admiration and infatuation with her made me the ideal candidate. When I, emboldened by Sophia’s subtle encouragement, asked her out on a date, it set off a chain reaction that led to Mason’s explosive fury.
With his gang—Liam, Ethan, and Ryan—he cornered me after school, their faces twisted with malice.
I don’t remember much after the first punch and second kick; I merely doubled over in pain and immediately blacked out.
The next thing I saw was darkness—total and utter darkness unlike anything I could ever hope to describe.
It was like existing in a place without life, without meaning or feeling—void of all light and hope.
The marshlands outside of Blackwater were desolate, a haunting expanse where decayed, rusted ships lay in a silent graveyard. This was to become my final resting place.
As the gang dragged my semi-conscious body through the muck, the eerie quiet and the creaking of the abandoned ships set an ominous tone.
Under the setting sun, they dug a shallow grave, preparing to bury me alive. Laughing cruelly, they threw me in, thinking it to be merely a prank that would teach me a valuable lesson.
Satisfied, they left for a party, promising to return in a couple of hours to dig me back out. But Sophia had other plans.
As the gang partied, Sophia slipped away to the marshlands, carrying a black candle and a book of ancient spells.
She stood over my grave and chanted incantations, while I screamed out, hoping someone would hear me and get me out.
Someone was there, and it was only when I stopped crying and truly listened that I realised who it really was.
“Sophia,” I called out her name.
“Thank God it’s you. Thank you, thank you. Please hurry and get me out of here!”
But all I heard was laughter. Why was she laughing at me? Then she started chanting again. This time I listened more closely to the words she spoke, and it was then that I finally understood the truth.
I could sense the candle’s flame atop my grave flickering in the cold night air as she performed the dark ritual with precision.
A feeling of immense dark pleasure was evident in the undertones of her voice. Each utterance was filled with equal measures of malice and passion.
I could sense a dark thrill enveloping her whole body as she envisioned me rising up as her ethereal servant, bound by violence and hate to do her bidding for all eternity.
Hours later, drunk and emboldened, Mason and his gang returned to the marshlands. The grave looked untouched, the ground smooth and undisturbed.
Panic set in as they frantically clawed at the earth, but I was gone. Confusion turned to fear as they realised the grave showed no sign of ever having been filled.
The eerie quiet of the marshlands seemed to mock them in their terror. As they made their way back to the city, the shadows seemed to grow longer, darker.
Each of them began to see me in the periphery of their vision, a pale, ghostly figure lurking in the darkness.
At first, they dismissed it as guilt or paranoia, but the sightings grew more frequent, more vivid. I was haunting them, my presence a constant, chilling reminder of their deed.
Meanwhile, my sister Sarah was desperately searching for me. She refused to believe the official story that I had run away and started her own investigation.
Her search for me led her to uncover dark secrets about Sophia’s family and their history of occult practices.
Sarah’s journey was filled with harrowing encounters as she delved deeper into the supernatural underbelly of Blackwater.
Then one night, she dreamt of me reaching out to her from the marshlands, my eyes filled with a haunting plea for help.
Determined to save me, Sarah visited the marshlands and the abandoned ship graveyard, where she sensed an oppressive, malevolent presence.
Desperate for answers, Mason and his gang sought out Sophia. She met them with a steely gaze, her bravado hiding a growing fear.
She admitted to encouraging me, enjoying the danger and the attention. Mason’s fury knew no bounds as he blamed her for their plight.
But Sophia, too, had begun to see me in the shadows, my eyes accusing, my presence inescapable.
The group, now fractured by fear and mistrust, turned on each other. In a frenzied confrontation, they inadvertently caused Sophia’s death, mistaking her panicked movements for another ghostly apparition.
The horror of their actions sank in as they realised they were responsible for yet another death.
Blackwater’s dark grey streets offered little solace. The shadows seemed alive, whispering secrets and threats.
Each of the remaining bullies was tormented by visions of me, in my eternal spectral form growing more tangible, and ever more menacing. For even without a master—my existence would remain as unchangeable as death itself.
They each sought help, but no one believed their fanciful stories of a vengeful ghost. After all, who would?
Weeks turned into months, and the bullies were driven to the brink of madness. Mason, once the fearless leader, was a shell of his former self, haunted by the boy that he had so maliciously buried alive.
The others fared no better, each consumed by guilt and fear, seeing me appear to them in every passing shadow, hearing my voice in every whisper of the wind.
In the end, Sarah discovered the truth about Sophia’s ritual and realised that I had become an undead puppet, bound by dark magic.
She bravely confronted my spirit in the marshlands, pleading with me to find peace. In a heart-wrenching climax, Sarah’s love and determination broke the dark spell, freeing my tormented soul.
However, the process cost Sarah her own life, as the malevolent energy claimed her as a final act of sacrifice.
The bullies, now completely unravelled, faced their ultimate demise in the most tragic and mysterious of circumstances.
Some said it was the guilt that drove them mad, others whispered of a curse. But those who knew the story of Alex and The Shadows understood the truth: in the darkness, secrets buried are never truly gone.
The marshlands held their secrets well, but the town of Blackwater would forever be haunted by the tale of a prank that went way too far, and the ghost who was forced to terrify and kill from beyond the grave.

Author’s Thoughts
I’ve always found something strangely fascinating about abandoned places.
Old buildings, forgotten streets and deserted shipyards. Places that were once full of life but now stand silent, slowly being reclaimed by nature.
They make me wonder about the people who once walked there, the lives they lived and the stories those places might hold.
Blackwater grew from that fascination, but also from a much darker thought.
Sometimes, people can be incredibly cruel without ever stopping to consider the consequences of their actions.
What begins as a joke, a prank or a moment of thoughtless behaviour can leave scars that last far longer than anyone imagined.
And sometimes, by the time we realise the harm we’ve caused, it’s already too late to put things right.
Of course, Blackwater is a work of supernatural fiction. But the emotions behind it — fear, loneliness, cruelty, guilt and the desire for justice — are very real.
And I wonder…
Are some places truly haunted by the people who died there, or by the terrible things the living once did?
Just something to think about…
