Delicious cherry trifle layered with custard, cream and cherries, beside two glasses of red wine in warm afternoon sunlight, with elegant gold Afternoon Delight lettering. A romantic poetry illustration by J. S. Summers.

Afternoon Delight 💗

Sometimes the most romantic moments in life are the simplest.

An afternoon together, a delicious dessert, a little laughter and perhaps a few cheeky glances across the table.

No grand gestures or expensive gifts. Just two people enjoying each other’s company, with a little chemistry bubbling away beneath the surface.

“Afternoon Delight” is a sweet, romantic and slightly naughty poem about sharing life’s little pleasures with someone special.

And if you happen to remember a certain song from the 1970s, you might just appreciate the dessert a little differently. 😉❤️

Afternoon Delight

Every day,

a new adventure.

Every day,

a different dessert.

And if today were a cherry trifle—

there would be ladyfingers

softened slowly

in sweet amaretto,

cherries resting

between each tender layer,

golden custard,

silken cream,

and two spoons

left waiting

beside the bowl.

We would sit together

while the afternoon light

fell softly through the window,

sharing stories,

stealing glances,

pretending not to notice

how close our hands had become.

And perhaps the sweetest part

would not be the trifle—

but the quiet moment

when you smiled at me,

and I realised

I would happily share

every afternoon

with you.
